O. Rova Reiz

O. Rova Reiz studies architecture at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen. Originally from Switzerland, her practice investigates spatiality across scales, through writing and physical interventions. As a Danish-speaker with a Swiss perspective, she shares a few insigths on contemporary spatial design practices from within. O. Rova Reiz is already working extra at an architect agency in parallell with her architect studies at the Royal Danish Academy. She has already at this young age, assisted a reputable artist/sculptor, known for her exhibitions at ex CFHill among others, on public commissions. Thrilled to let O. Rova Reiz tell us a bit more about what's popping and developing around Copenhagen and DK, in the area of design and architecture.
ISSUE 01 • WINTER 2023
Q: Copenhagen lifestyle in 5 words?
A: self - luminous - sea - voluptuous - support
Q: Danish design in 5 words?
A: hands - sharp - timeless - craft - omnipresent
Q: Life as an architecture student in Copenhagen?
A: Cultivating proximity with materials in a hands-on approach. Letting landscape and culture meet. Seeing a project in bloom in your personal atelier space. Cycling everywhere. Learning by doing. Reading on your favourite sunny bench and taking a swim in the canal when need of a break.
Q: What's popping and what trends can you see?
A: Crafts and luxury are not opposed. Spatial designers are currently letting traditional methods meet contemporary designs. In Mentze - Ottenstein's collaboration with Tekla for this year's 3 DOD, rational and romantic aesthetics merge, with finely embroderied bedding displayed on sweek wooden bed frames in Charlottenborg's light blue spaces. It's a celebration of design and crafts in all layers of time.
Q: Any sustainable trends you would like to highlight for the future?
A: Using materials with intention, honesty and a deep understanding of their innate qualities, to cultivate durable aestetics and slower processes. Aiming for beauty and robustness is a sutstainable practice as designs more likely will be taken care of and stand the test of time.
Q: What inspires you most?
A: Curiosity and contemplation. Passionate musings with other people, digging deep when it feels right.
Q: What are you proudest o so far?
A: My daily model-making practice, as a way to re-sacralise slow crafts in an ever-evolving world.
Q: What part of project making feels most exciting?
A: Holding on to naive sketches made at the very beginning of a project. Drawn with pencil and paper, letting changes unfold in drawn form. Actively using models as a research tool.
Q: In which context are you the happiest? Where do you thrive and forget time and space?
A: I loose track of time at sea, and using my hands to make a model at any scale.
Q: Favourite place to be - for dreams and creativity?
A: My atelier. On my 1960´s bike. My archive on thoughts on rivers. Close to my bookshelves. On a wooden bench in the morning sun.
Q: Favourite saying?
A: Pire que double - the celebration of ambiguity and multiplicity
Q: Favourite Danish dish?
A: Koldskål - buttermilk, served with strawberries and kammerjunkere biscuits.
